Cayo Largo del Sur  is at the eastern end of the Canarreos Archipelago, south of the western part of the island of Cuba.  It is 14.5 square miles (37.5 square kilometers) in size—15.5 miles (25 kilometers) long, slightly over half a mile (one kilometer) across at its narrowest point and four miles (6.5 kilometers) across at its widest.

It has a climate Moderate tropical.  Average temperature is 80.6º F. (27º C.), but it may go up to 82.4º F. (28º C.) in the summer.  The average temperature in the winter is 77.7º F. (25.4º C.).  There is little rainfall, and the wind is usually from the east.
